According to BET News:
News Comes as a NAACP Chapter in Georgia Calls for Boycott of Nike and Reebok
A co-defendant in the federal dog-fighting case against Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick has pleaded guilty and pledged cooperation in Vick’s prosecution.
Tony Taylor, 34, changed his plea before a Virginia judge this morning after pleading not guilty, along with Vick, last week. Two others have also been indicted in the case. Speculation is that Taylor’s cooperation with federal prosecutors will help ensure a conviction against Vick. An indictment states that Taylor discovered the site that developed into Bad Newz Kennels, the training and dog-fighting grounds where Vick and others allegedly engaged in the illegal sport.
The NFL star, who is accused of conspiracy charges that involve competitive dog-fighting, training pit bulls to fight and transporting the animals across state lines, was jeered by a crowd as he entered the courthouse last week. Prosecutors say the operation on Vick’s property in Surry County was the base of activity. Vick was released without bond, pending a November 26 trial date.
A new “superceding” indictment was also announced by prosecutors as forthcoming. In a statement read by his lawyer, after the proceedings, Vick urged the public to reserve judgment against him, adding an apology to his mother: “I'm sorry for what she has had to go through in this most trying of times.” Taylor is accused of helping to buy the pit bulls involved with fighting, and also of executing dogs that didn’t “perform well,” according to the indictment.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People asked the public to withhold judgment until Vick has his chance in court. A chapter of the organization in Georgia is also calling for a boycott against Nike and Reebok and other companies that have pulled Vick contracts.
